EGA, Century Aluminum Seal Pact to Build First New U.S. Smelter Since 1980 in Oklahoma

The agreement advances a 750,000-ton Oklahoma smelter with engineering underway, pending power contracts.

Overview

  • EGA will own 60% and Century 40% of the venture, with both companies concentrating their U.S. greenfield efforts on the Inola site.
  • The planned capacity of 750,000 tonnes per year would more than double current U.S. primary output, making it the nation’s largest smelter.
  • Construction is targeted to begin by the end of 2026 with production before the decade closes, subject to approvals, power agreements and financing.
  • Detailed engineering is in progress as long-term power negotiations continue with Public Service Company of Oklahoma and state officials.
  • The project is slated to create about 4,000 construction jobs and 1,000 permanent positions and is billed as a catalyst for a regional aluminum hub that could cut reliance on imports supplying roughly 85% of U.S. demand.
