EFL Charges Southampton Over Alleged Spying on Middlesbrough Training

An expedited hearing could shape how the EFL enforces its ban on observing rivals’ training before matches.

Overview

  • The EFL, which charged Southampton on Friday, referred the case to an Independent Disciplinary Commission and asked for shortened response deadlines under Regulations 3.4 and 127.
  • Middlesbrough staff say they confronted a man filming at Rockliffe Park on Thursday, who deleted footage, refused to identify himself and changed clothes before leaving the site.
  • Southampton said it will cooperate and offered no further comment, as the play-off semi-final first leg at the Riverside goes ahead today with the return at St Mary’s on Tuesday.
  • If a breach is proven, the commission can impose fines, points deductions, transfer measures or other sanctions, with reporting indicating expulsion from the current play-offs is unlikely.
  • Rule 127 was introduced after Leeds were fined £200,000 in 2019 for spying, which now explicitly outlaws watching or attempting to watch an opponent’s training within 72 hours of a match.
