Overview
- Federal investigators opened cases into 15 K–12 districts, including New York City, and three colleges, citing allegations that entities allowed students assigned male at birth to play on girls’ and women’s teams.
- The Office for Civil Rights and the DOJ–Education Title IX Special Investigations Team are leading the inquiries announced Jan. 14–15, which could result in penalties up to rescinding federal funds.
- The Education Department also launched an investigation this week into the California Community College Athletic Association over its transgender participation policy.
- The targeted K–12 entities span California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Maine, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, and Washington, and the colleges include Santa Monica College, Santa Rosa Junior College, and the University of Nevada, Reno.
- The enforcement push follows a February 2025 executive order directing Title IX actions on this issue and comes as the Supreme Court weighs Little v. Hecox and West Virginia v. B.P.J., with rulings expected by early summer.
