Edomex Completes First Phase of Weapon Exchange, Destroying 340 Firearms

Authorities say the voluntary, paid program removed weapons from homes, aligned with the federal disarmament drive and will resume Phase 2 on August 3 in four municipalities.

Overview

  • The state reported Wednesday that the Canje de Armas 2026 first phase ran from May 4 to June 13 and covered 19 of 42 planned municipalities.
  • Officials said the campaign collected 340 firearms, 449 grenades and 14,059 cartridges, with 230 short guns and 110 long guns destroyed following protocol.
  • Authorities paid participants a total of 3,011,053 pesos as incentives and exchanged 1,955 toy weapons for educational materials for children.
  • The program is voluntary and anonymous, was presented at the Mesa de Paz led by Governor Delfina Gómez Álvarez, and is described as aligned with the federal 'Sí al Desarme, Sí a la Paz' strategy.
  • Phase 1 is paused and Phase 2 will begin August 3 in Atizapán de Zaragoza, Atlacomulco, Chimalhuacán and Zumpango, a step officials say aims to reduce household risks from accidental shootings and illegal arms circulation.
