Edgewater Shooting Leaves 1 Dead as CPD Detains Suspect in Separate Rogers Park Attack

Detectives are probing whether the Edgewater case was a murder–suicide.

Overview

  • Two men were shot about 7:20 a.m. Thursday on the 1400 block of West Thome Avenue in Edgewater, where one man died at St. Francis Hospital and a 53-year-old man remained in critical condition.
  • Police recovered a gun at the Edgewater scene and found another weapon with four magazines on one of the men at the hospital, according to a preliminary report.
  • At least one witness told officers a man shot another person before shooting himself, and area detectives continued to investigate the circumstances.
  • Hayt Elementary and Northside Catholic Academy, both near the Edgewater block, briefly went on soft lockdown before police cleared the area, and officials said no children were involved.
  • In a separate afternoon case near the Howard CTA station in Rogers Park, a 39-year-old man was shot in the calf, officers used city cameras to track and detain a suspect on North Paulina Street, and a firearm was recovered.
