ED Raids Durgapur Home of West Bengal Police Officer in Coal-Smuggling Probe

The agency has summoned the suspended officer to appear on March 13 under its money-laundering inquiry.

Overview

  • Enforcement Directorate teams conducted a fresh search on March 11 at officer Manoranjan Mondal’s Durgapur residence and pasted a notice directing him to appear on March 13, marking his third summons.
  • The action formed part of a PMLA investigation that included coordinated searches at about nine premises linked to several individuals, including Kiran Khan, Prabir Dutta and Sheikh Akhtar.
  • Agency sources reported the recovery of roughly Rs 70 lakh in cash from a Jamuria businessman’s residence during the searches.
  • Investigators questioned Mondal’s family members during the operation, and his presence at the start of the raid was not immediately confirmed; officials have indicated legal action for further non-compliance.
  • The ED had earlier raided Mondal’s home on February 3, and he was previously suspended in 2024 after allegations of police links to coal smuggling before being briefly posted as Budbud OC and then removed.
