ED Probes 32 Bank-Fraud Cases After 54 Accused Fled India, Seizes Over Rs 35,000 Crore

Authorities are pursuing foreign-based suspects through extradition, special economic-offender laws to recover seized assets

Overview

  • The Enforcement Directorate is investigating 32 bank-fraud cases in which 54 accused have left the country, the finance minister told the Rajya Sabha.
  • The agency has attached assets worth Rs 35,166.28 crore under the Prevention of Money‑laundering Act and has secured confiscations totalling Rs 15,184.19 crore.
  • Proceedings under the Fugitive Economic Offenders Act have been started against 27 people and courts have declared nine as fugitive economic offenders, leading to Rs 840.68 crore in confiscations.
  • Extradition requests and Interpol notices have been issued and extradition proceedings are under way for 18 accused, with authorities seeking cooperation from foreign jurisdictions.
  • The minister’s reply on Tuesday also placed these enforcement steps beside wider financial metrics such as Rs 62,683.19 crore held in the RBI‑managed DEA Fund, USD 97.13 billion in RBI dollar sales between February and May 2026, and IRDAI grievance counts to show the case’s consumer and systemic context.
