ED Attaches Rs 2 Crore in Assets of Western Railway Porter

The provisional order seeks to preserve property the agency says was bought with corrupt proceeds and starts a formal adjudication under the PMLA.

Overview

  • The Enforcement Directorate issued a provisional attachment order on Thursday, June 18, freezing immovable properties valued at about Rs 2 crore linked to Prashant Baldevbhai Rabari, a porter with Western Railway.
  • ED investigators say financial analysis shows Rabari accumulated roughly Rs 2.58 crore in movable and immovable assets between January 1, 2017 and February 2, 2021, a sum the agency alleges exceeds his lawful income.
  • The attached assets include properties registered in Rabari’s name and in the name of his wife, Amulben Rabari, which the ED says were at least partly financed with proceeds of corrupt activity.
  • The probe began after a Gujarat Police FIR under the Prevention of Corruption Act disclosed predicate offences, allowing the ED to take action under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act and pursue asset tracing.
  • The provisional attachment is an interim investigatory step that bars transfer of the listed properties while the ED continues its financial probe and the PMLA adjudicating authority reviews the attachment.
