Overview
- The Supreme Court ruled the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) constitutional on Wednesday, removing the main legal obstacle to the nationwide roll overhaul.
- On May 30 the ECI opened the second National Conference of Counsels at IIIDEM in New Delhi, where Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar delivered his first public remarks since the judgment.
- The two-day meeting brought together ECI counsels, state CEOs and senior officials for technical briefings and live demonstrations of voter roll preparation, SIR steps, polling-day protocols and counting procedures.
- The Commission says SIR has been completed in 10 states and three Union Territories so far, trimming electoral rolls by 5.58 crore through fresh preparation rather than the previous summary revisions.
- The conference is designed to tighten legal coordination, equip advocates to defend ECI decisions in courts and reassure voters that field staff, technology like ECINET, and Booth Level Officers and Agents are being used to keep rolls accurate.
