Ebola Outbreak in Eastern DRC Tops 1,000 Cases as Virus Reaches France

A rare Bundibugyo strain that has no vaccine or proven treatment raises the risk of wider spread unless tracing and safe access improve.

Overview

  • The outbreak, which was declared on May 15, has grown rapidly and now exceeds 1,000 confirmed cases with about 250–270 deaths, according to Congolese and WHO figures.
  • Health authorities say the epidemic is driven by the uncommon Bundibugyo strain for which there is no vaccine or strain-specific approved therapy.
  • Officials report major gaps in surveillance with more than 35,000 contacts still needing follow-up and are struggling to reach people in conflict-affected areas and crowded displacement camps.
  • The virus has crossed borders to Uganda and for the first time in this outbreak a returning humanitarian doctor tested positive in France and was isolated while passenger tracing and monitoring began.
  • The WHO has declared an international emergency, has expanded testing and treatment capacity, and plans trials of the monoclonal MBP134 and remdesivir as response teams warn that more access, staff and funding are needed.
