Ebola Outbreak in DRC Tops 7,000 Cases as Virus Reaches Seventh Province

A shortage of beds, staff plus no licensed vaccine for the Bundibugyo strain is straining the DRC response.

Overview

  • By Saturday more than 7,000 confirmed cases had been reported in the Democratic Republic of Congo with roughly 3,300–3,400 deaths, making this the country’s largest and fastest‑growing Ebola epidemic.
  • On Friday authorities confirmed the first case in the northwestern province of Sud‑Ubangi after a traveler who passed through Rwanda and Uganda died, and 38 people who had contact with him were identified and quarantined.
  • The outbreak is caused by the rare Bundibugyo species of ebolavirus for which there is no licensed vaccine or proven therapy, so Congo is vaccinating frontline workers with the Zaire‑focused Ervebo under emergency and trial rules while Bundibugyo candidates are tested.
  • Response teams say operations are being weakened by armed insecurity, mass displacement and strikes by unpaid health staff, and the World Health Organization has called for thousands more health workers and many more treatment beds.
  • The use of long road and river routes by the infected traveler highlights how mobility and weak surveillance could export the virus to neighboring countries and spread infection in crowded sites such as schools and displacement camps.
