Overview
- Joshua Mills, 32, was sentenced Thursday by Judge Richard L. Caretti to serve concurrent prison terms after a no contest plea in two violent-offense cases.
- In the Sterling Heights case, the court imposed 63 months to 20 years for assault with intent to do great bodily harm, plus 2 to 4 years for two counts of assaulting or resisting officers, and 1 year for second-degree retail fraud.
- In the separate Eastpointe case, Mills received 66 months to 20 years for assault with intent to do great bodily harm and 1 year for second-offense domestic violence.
- Prosecutors said the Walmart incident began in October 2025 when police used a Taser during a shoplifting arrest and Mills then sat up and tried to stab an officer in the face with a screwdriver, narrowly missing him.
- The court credited 193 days served and ordered no contact with Walmart and the officers involved, as the prosecutor said the outcome addresses the threat to victims and public safety.
