Easter Long Weekend: What’s Open and Closed in Regina and Greater Sudbury

Provincial retail rules plus Sudbury weather warnings drive the biggest changes.

As the weather warms up, sure signs of spring are popping up around the city heading into the Easter long weekend.

Overview

  • In Greater Sudbury, most government offices, banks, libraries and big retailers close on Good Friday and Easter Sunday under Ontario’s Retail Business Holidays Act, with small shops and some pharmacies allowed to open.
  • Regina Transit runs a Sunday schedule for Good Friday, the RIDELine and information centre are closed, paratransit operates from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., and city parking meters are not in effect on the holiday.
  • Regina facilities vary by site, with the Royal Saskatchewan Museum open, the MacKenzie Art Gallery closed, and the landfill and household hazardous waste depot closed on Friday and Sunday.
  • Greater Sudbury adjusts operations for the holiday, with landfills and the recycling centre closed on Good Friday, GOVA on a holiday timetable, and Friday residential waste collection moved to Saturday.
  • Community plans continue with events such as Regina’s museum egg hunts, Sudbury’s Basketball Super League playoff games, dog shows in Coniston, and Science North’s illusions exhibit, though freezing-rain and heavy-rain warnings in Sudbury could disrupt outings.
