East Coast Main Line Reopens After Person Hit by Train as Delays Stretch Into Late Morning

The closure on a key North East stretch left resources out of position, slowing the morning recovery.

Overview

  • National Rail, which reported the incident Tuesday, said a person was hit by a train between Darlington and Newcastle and closed all lines while emergency services responded.
  • Lines later reopened, yet LNER warned of delays of up to about 45 minutes and possible cancellations on routes to and from London King’s Cross with full recovery expected around late morning.
  • Operators including LNER, CrossCountry, Northern, TransPennine Express and Lumo accepted tickets on alternative routes, and rail replacement coaches were arranged between York, Darlington, Durham and Newcastle.
  • Separate London problems added pressure for commuters, with the Piccadilly line facing severe eastbound delays after a signal failure at Earl’s Court and the Mildmay line part‑suspended by a faulty train at Shepherd’s Bush.
  • Great Northern and Thameslink also reported residual delays into King’s Cross after earlier engineering works overran, and passengers were advised to check for Delay Repay eligibility and to note support contacts shared by operators.
