DWP Urges Pension Credit Claims Ahead of April Rise With Backpay Available

Officials want eligible retirees to claim now to lock in April's higher rate with up to three months of arrears.

Overview

  • From April 2026, the Guarantee Credit will lift weekly income floors to £238 for single pensioners and £363.25 for couples.
  • Successful new claims can be backdated for up to three months, meaning first payments may include a lump sum of arrears.
  • The DWP estimates about 760,000 eligible pensioners are not claiming, even though Pension Credit averages roughly £86 a week and unlocks help such as Winter Fuel Payments, Council Tax reductions and free NHS dental care.
  • About 78% of new claims are processed within the 50‑working‑day target, and applications can start up to four months before State Pension age.
  • Some older state pensioners could gain around £1,006 over the year when the state pension uplift is combined with the Pension Credit increase.
