Overview
- Three of the nine plaques installed last week to honor locals killed by ETA were defaced overnight with red paint and the slogan “Gora ETA.”
- The damaged memorials commemorate José María Urquizu near the Santa María portico, Jesús Mari Pedrosa, and municipal police officer Pedro Ruiz in Madalena.
- The PNV–PSE municipal government called the attacks absolutely intolerable and ordered urgent cleaning to restore the plaques the same day.
- García, who proposed the memorial initiative, said he will file complaints for hate crimes and damages against those responsible.
- The plaques are set in the locations of the killings, display names with the phrase “Víctima de” and the year, include QR-linked biographies, and appear in Basque and Spanish.
