Dua Lipa Sues Samsung Over TV Box Photo, Seeks $15 Million

The new case tests how far companies can use celebrity images on packaging without clear permission.

Overview

  • Dua Lipa filed the suit in California federal court on Friday, alleging copyright infringement, right of publicity violations and false endorsement, and seeking at least $15 million plus an injunction.
  • The complaint says Samsung put a copyrighted photo titled “Dua Lipa – Backstage at Austin City Limits, 2024” on the front of TV boxes sold in U.S. stores, creating the impression she endorsed the product.
  • Her lawyers say they began sending cease-and-desist demands in June 2025 and allege Samsung refused to stop, with the boxes still in stores.
  • The filing includes pictures of the packaging and social media posts from buyers who said the image pushed them to purchase, evidence used to support a Lanham Act false-endorsement claim.
  • Samsung declined to comment on the pending case, which is at an early stage in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.
