Drone Strike Shuts Down Yandex Data Centre in Vladimir

The shutdown removes key cloud and AI capacity, raising the prospect of prolonged outages and escalation.

Overview

  • Yandex reported that a drone strike on Sunday damaged its Vladimir facility and forced the centre to be taken completely offline with no injuries reported.
  • The outage has disrupted more than 80 Yandex consumer and cloud services, leaving users in Russia and neighbouring countries unable to use taxi apps, some banking features, smart‑home tools and AI APIs.
  • This is the third reported attack on Yandex facilities in four days following strikes on Sasovo and Kaluga, a pattern Kyiv and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy have described as reciprocal to Russian hits on Ukrainian infrastructure.
  • The Sasovo site previously held two of Yandex’s three AI supercomputers, and Russian reporting cited by The Insider estimates it could take around six months to replace damaged servers and restore capacity.
  • Yandex is operating in emergency mode and advising clients to use disaster‑recovery plans while analysts warn procurement limits, higher server prices and new anti‑drone costs could prolong outages and raise cloud expenses.
