Drone-Backed Raid Hits Nigerian Base as Separate Attack Kills 25 in Borno

Borno faces a protracted insurgency now in its 17th year.

Overview

  • Militants using armed drones raided the Sabon Gari army base before dawn, briefly breaching the facility and destroying vehicles, the military said.
  • The army reported retaking the base and pursuing the attackers, while two security sources said at least nine soldiers and two Civilian Joint Task Force members were killed and about 16 were wounded.
  • In a separate incident hours later, gunmen killed at least 25 construction workers in Sabon Gari town, according to a senior police officer, a CJTF official, and victims’ relatives.
  • Officials have not determined whether Boko Haram or the ISWAP faction carried out the base attack, though both operate in the region.
  • Reports also described an ambush near Damasak in which 13 soldiers were captured and seven killed, including a commanding officer, with no official army statement yet.
