Driver Who Watched TikTok Jailed for Eight Years Over Fatal A12 Crash

Digital evidence proved persistent distracted driving.

Overview

  • Ismaeel Malik, who pleaded guilty in March, was sentenced Wednesday to eight years in prison and banned from driving for 10 years and four months, with two-thirds to be served in custody.
  • The crash happened on October 22, 2024 on the A12 near Kelvedon, where Malik hit stationary traffic at about 70mph and 58-year-old Norman Case died at the scene.
  • Essex Police phone analysis showed 94 interactions in the two hours before impact, with TikTok launched 22 times and playing for about one hour and 20 minutes, and the app open during the collision.
  • Dashcam footage and witnesses indicated traffic ahead was obvious and there was no sign of braking, and a vehicle inspection found no defect after Malik claimed his brakes had failed.
  • Victim impact statements described Mr Case as a devoted husband and father, and police said the case shows how illegal phone use while driving can have devastating, lasting consequences.
