Driver Pleads Guilty in Case Tied to Killing of NYPD Detective Jonathan Diller

Prosecutors said the plea spares Diller’s family another trial and results in a planned prison term for the driver.

Overview

  • Lindy Jones, 43, pleaded guilty Wednesday to criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree for a loaded 9 mm found in the glove compartment of the car he was driving.
  • Queens Supreme Court Justice Michael Yavinsky indicated he would sentence Jones to five years in prison followed by five years of post-release supervision, with formal sentencing set for July 14, 2026.
  • Investigators recovered a defaced, loaded 9 mm with its serial number scratched off during a court-authorized search on March 26, 2024, and prosecutors cited Jones’s prior firearms convictions in urging the five-year term.
  • Jones’s codefendant, Guy Rivera, was tried and in April 2026 was convicted of aggravated manslaughter, attempted murder and weapons charges and sentenced to 115 years to life for firing the weapon that killed Detective Jonathan Diller.
  • The guilty plea prompted support from police unions and officials who said it spares Diller’s family the trauma of another trial and keeps focus on illegal guns and how they are traced and prosecuted in Queens.
