Driver Killed in Fiery Gravel Truck Crash on I-80/94 Near Lake Station

Identification and cause remain unconfirmed.

Overview

  • Indiana State Police said the crash occurred around 4 p.m. Monday on eastbound I-80/94 at the 13 mile-marker, about a mile east of the I-65 interchange.
  • Troopers found a gravel truck that struck the median wall and an overhead signpost, causing the trailer to overturn and throw gravel across westbound lanes.
  • The truck became engulfed in flames with the driver trapped in the cab, and the Lake Station Fire Department extinguished the fire.
  • The Lake County Coroner will handle identification, and the Indiana Department of Emergency Management was notified after burning oil drained into the interstate’s sewer system.
  • As of 7 p.m., lanes in both directions were restricted with traffic passing on the right shoulder, and the investigation by state police is ongoing.
