Overview
- Warren officers tried to stop a Dodge Ram near Fairfield and Georgiana and, after the driver fled, the truck ran a red light at 8 Mile and Schoenherr and struck a westbound car, killing 48-year-old Remeious Washington, who was later pronounced dead.
- The traffic stop attempt occurred just before 2 a.m. Thursday, and after the crash five people fled on foot while officers arrested four juveniles and continued to search for a fifth occupant.
- Police say the suspects are believed responsible for as many as 15 vehicle-related thefts and attempted thefts in Warren over the prior 48 hours.
- The Warren Police Detective Bureau and Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit are conducting an active investigation into the chase and crash as prosecutors and department leaders review potential charges and the pursuit itself.
- Washington’s family says the pursuit should have ended before the intersection, and the case adds to a week of serious crimes in the Detroit area that could increase scrutiny of pursuit policy and responses to juvenile crime.
