Overview
- A burgundy Chrysler 300 struck a 43-year-old woman and four children, ages 3 to 6, at a block-party prom in the Holmesburg section of Northeast Philadelphia on Friday night, injuring all five.
- The victims were taken to three hospitals: the adult and a 5-year-old to Einstein Medical Center, a 3-year-old and a 6-year-old to St. Christopher’s, and a 4-year-old to Jefferson Torresdale where officials later listed that child in critical condition.
- Police say the driver fled the scene but was pursued by a parent for about four blocks, a physical altercation followed on the 4500 block of Shelmire Avenue, and an 18-year-old was taken into custody.
- The burgundy Chrysler 300 was recovered and is being held by investigators, and prosecutors are expected to charge the 18-year-old with hitting the victims and fleeing while investigators determine any charges related to the confrontation.
- Investigators continue to piece together the sequence of events and causes, and the case has heightened local concern about safety at neighborhood gatherings and about how authorities will handle citizen chases and post-crash confrontations.
