Driver Fatally Shoots Suspected Carjacker After Garland Crash, Police Say

Police say the driver is cooperating during an open investigation.

Overview

  • The confrontation, which unfolded Sunday around 3:30 p.m. after a crash near Highway 66 and Dairy Road, ended when a driver shot a man who allegedly tried to take his car.
  • Investigators say the man in a green car had hit two vehicles, then moved to a gas station lot where he pulled at door handles and briefly got into one car but failed to drive off.
  • Police say he then crossed to a convenience store lot and fought with the driver of a white Chevrolet Impala that had two women and several children inside.
  • The wounded man was taken to a hospital and later died, and officers said the Impala’s driver stayed at the scene and has not been charged as of Monday.
  • Garland Police reported no other injuries and described the deceased as Hispanic, and they have not released his name pending next-of-kin notification, which is standard practice.
