Driver Charged After Fatal Soho Road Hit-and-Run in Handsworth

The case moves to court with officers still seeking dash-cam footage.

Overview

  • Harinderpal Athwal, 41, of Sorrel Close, Oldbury, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving, causing serious injury by dangerous driving, failing to stop, causing death by driving while disqualified and uninsured, and failing to report a collision, and was remanded to appear at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.
  • The collision happened shortly before 11.20am on 16 December near the Whitehall Road junction when a Vauxhall Corsa struck two pedestrians on Soho Road.
  • A 54-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene despite advanced life support, and a 47-year-old woman sustained serious leg injuries and remains in hospital where her condition is not believed to be life-threatening.
  • Police say the driver fled the scene and the Corsa was recovered nearby, and a 41-year-old suspect was arrested just before 9am on 17 December on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving before being charged.
  • Detectives continue to appeal for witnesses and dash-cam or mobile footage, asking anyone with information to call 101 quoting incident number 1819 of 16 December, as the community held a minute’s silence and the road later reopened.
