DRI Seizes Rs 2.89 Crore Gold Hidden in Meat Grinder at Mumbai Courier Hub

The intelligence-led raid now pivots the inquiry toward the network behind courier-led gold runs.

Overview

  • DRI officers, acting on specific intelligence, examined a parcel declared as a meat grinder that arrived from Riyadh at the International Courier Terminal in Sahar, Mumbai.
  • On dismantling the appliance, officials recovered 32 cut pieces of foreign‑origin gold weighing 1.815 kg, valued at about Rs 2.89 crore.
  • Two suspects, identified as M.A. Shaikh and M.Z. Ujjainwala, were arrested after they came into the picture for collecting and clearing the consignment.
  • Investigators say the accused arranged KYC documents of a firm to facilitate clearance through the courier channel, and the seizure was made under the Customs Act.
  • DRI describes the case as part of a broader smuggling syndicate and is probing overseas sourcing, local distribution, suspected hawala transfers, and payments to middlemen reportedly in the Rs 15,000–17,000 range per parcel.
