Dresden’s Neues Rathaus Modernization Advances as PV Array Nears November Start

Fire-safety upgrades drive the overhaul to ready the seat for modern use.

Overview

  • Work has been underway since July 2025 on a building-wide refurbishment to renew systems, interiors and safety at the 115-year-old city hall.
  • The city budgets roughly €72 million for the current phase, covering new building services, windows, lighting and full interior finishes.
  • Fire protection is the largest and costliest element, with 420 meters of firewall and upgrades to 1,125 doors planned.
  • The long-closed Lichthof is being rebuilt as an events venue for up to 256 people with a higher steel-glass roof and improved acoustics.
  • A 625-module rooftop photovoltaic system is installed and expected to be switched on in early November to supply about 15% of the building’s electricity, as the administration targets reoccupancy for up to 1,300 staff by 2030.
