DRDO Unveils Tracked and Wheeled Armoured Platforms With Crewless Turret and ATGMs

The rollout signals a bid to replace ageing BMP-2 vehicles through a more self-reliant, partner-driven supply chain.

Overview

  • DRDO’s Vehicles Research & Development Establishment in Ahilyanagar showcased two Advanced Armoured Platforms on Saturday, unveiled by Chairman Samir V. Kamat.
  • Both prototypes use an indigenous 30 mm remote turret paired with a 7.62 mm coaxial gun and are configured to launch anti-tank guided missiles.
  • The vehicles are amphibious with hydro-jets and run high-power engines with automatic transmissions, delivering STANAG Level 4 and 5 modular blast and ballistic protection.
  • Tata Advanced Systems and Bharat Forge built the prototypes with MSME support, and DRDO plans to lift local content from about 65% to 90% while adding features such as AI during development and user trials over the next two years.
  • Kamat cautioned that some firms quote unrealistically low values to become Development‑cum‑Production Partners and said DRDO will refine the selection process to keep it fair and transparent.
