DRCC Reports Record 24,000 Contacts in 2025 as Therapy and Cyber‑Abuse Cases Surge

The figures suggest more survivors are reaching out, with frontline capacity stretched.

Overview

  • DRCC’s annual report, released Tuesday, logged 23,955 contacts to the 24‑hour helpline in 2025, up 5.5% on 2024 and 29% on 2023.
  • Demand for longer‑term care grew as DRCC supported 838 therapy clients in 2025, about 70% higher than two years earlier.
  • Disclosures of online abuse, including image‑based harm, rose to 119 cases in 2025, a 63% jump on 2024, with many reports from teenagers and young adults.
  • Adult rape accounted for 34.9% of disclosures and child sexual abuse 21.3%, while 70.2% of contacts were from women and about one in five were under 30.
  • Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan called the numbers stark and said he will advance laws to restrict access to counselling notes, signaling plans to strengthen supports and legal safeguards.
