Dover Man Charged After Alleged Unprovoked Attack on N.H. State Trooper

Felony counts follow an attempt to grab the trooper’s gun.

  • Police say Jonathan G. Newcomb, 53, approached a parked state trooper Thursday in a lot off Dover Point Road near Route 16 while holding a stick and a metal tool.
  • As the trooper tried to identify him, Newcomb allegedly punched the trooper, tore his uniform, and tried to take his gun before the trooper subdued him with help from bystanders after a prolonged struggle.
  • Both men were evaluated at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital for minor injuries and were released.
  • Newcomb was booked at the Strafford County Jail and was arraigned Friday in Dover District Court.
  • Charges include felony criminal threatening and attempting to take a firearm from law enforcement, plus misdemeanors such as driving while intoxicated and resisting arrest, and police have not named the trooper.
