DoorDash Launches 'Tasks' App Paying Couriers to Capture Real-World Data for AI

The pilot rolls out in select U.S. markets excluding California, New York City, Seattle and Colorado.

Overview

  • Couriers can earn by submitting original images, videos and audio, from filming household chores and cooking to recording multilingual conversations and photographing store menus or hotel entrances.
  • DoorDash says pay is shown upfront and tied to task complexity, and WIRED’s test found listings pegged to hourly rates with short time caps that translate into small per-task payouts.
  • Data collected will be used to train and evaluate DoorDash’s own AI and robotics systems as well as partner models across sectors such as retail, insurance, hospitality and technology, according to Bloomberg’s reporting.
  • Tasks appear both in a new standalone app focused on AI training data and within the Dasher app for location-based jobs, with examples including scanning store shelves and assisting Waymo vehicles by closing doors.
  • The company touts access to more than 8 million Dashers and says over 2 million tasks have been completed since 2024, even as critics flag labor and automation concerns and analysts link the geographic exclusions to stricter local gig-work rules.
