Doon Medical College Penalizes 9 Students After Anti-Ragging Probe Into Assaults on Juniors

An internal inquiry confirmed attacks on first-year students, triggering class suspensions, hostel expulsions, plus fines for members of the 2023 and 2024 batches.

Overview

  • Following a committee report submitted to the principal, the college acted on two cases, including a January 12 assault in which a junior was beaten with belts and had his hair forcibly cut.
  • Two seniors were suspended from classes for two months, expelled from the hostel for the duration of the course and internship, and fined Rs 50,000 each.
  • Seven other seniors received one-month class suspensions and three-month hostel expulsions, with several identified through CCTV in a separate hostel incident.
  • Uttarakhand Health Minister Dhan Singh Rawat took cognisance of the matter and directed strict action, as the principal reiterated a zero-tolerance policy on ragging.
  • The complainant reported intimidation inside the hostel after the off-campus assault and underwent a medical examination, with the case renewing scrutiny of prior ragging episodes in 2019 and 2023.
