Doom Runs on Canon EOS 550D Using Magic Lantern Module

Showing how open-source firmware can repurpose old camera hardware for unexpected uses, the GitHub release also highlights a real risk of bricking if installed on the wrong model or firmware.

Overview

  • Developer Bas Lichtjaar published Doom550D v0.4.1 on GitHub on August 20, 2026, delivering a working port of the 1993 game that runs on the Canon EOS 550D's DIGIC 4 processor.
  • The release maps camera controls to game inputs, adds 48 kHz mono sound, supports save/load and multiple WAD files, and offers an optional 360x240 display mode scaled for the 550D screen.
  • The build works only on Canon EOS 550D units running firmware version 1.0.9 because the module depends on exact memory addresses from that firmware.
  • The developer and coverage warn that installing the module on other Canon models or firmware versions can brick the camera, and the GitHub release does not include commercial Doom WADs so users must supply legally obtained game data.
  • The project uses the long-running Magic Lantern firmware modding ecosystem and continues the hobbyist tradition of porting Doom to unusual hardware while showing both the creative potential and the practical risks of low-level camera firmware hacks.
