DOJ Epstein Files Reveal Emails About Toxic ‘Trumpet’ Plants and Scopolamine

Newly released Justice Department documents highlight Epstein’s awareness of toxic trumpet plants, providing no proof they were used.

Overview

  • Media reports detail a March 3, 2014 email in which Epstein wrote, “ask Chris about my trumpet plants at nursery,” indicating he tracked the plants’ status.
  • Another email chain forwarded to Epstein in January 2015 carried an article titled “Scopolamine: Powerful drug growing in the forests of Colombia that ELIMINATES free will,” describing victims as “highly suggestible.”
  • A 2022 message in the released files relays a victim impact statement alleging scopolamine exposure in December 2014, an account reported without independent confirmation in the documents.
  • Trumpet plants such as Brugmansia and Datura contain tropane alkaloids including scopolamine, which in high doses can cause hallucinations, amnesia and extreme suggestibility alongside severe toxicity.
  • The DOJ has indicated no further releases of the Epstein files, as outlets on Feb. 16–18 spotlighted these references and noted that some experts say scopolamine may evade routine toxicology screens.
