Overview
- DOJ and ATF released 34 proposed and final rules Wednesday following a comprehensive review ordered by President Trump’s Executive Order 14206.
- The package proposes rescinding ATF’s 2023 pistol brace rule and rolling back the 2024 dealer definition that sought to expand background checks to more gun show sales.
- Officials also plan to revise the federal definition of “machine gun” in light of the Supreme Court’s Cargill ruling and to modernize ATF Form 4473 used for background-check paperwork.
- Robert Cekada won Senate confirmation 59–39 and, hours later, joined Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche to present what Blanche called the largest ATF rule package in the last 15 years combined.
- The proposals now move to Federal Register publication and public comment as gun safety advocates denounce the rollback after the Correspondents’ Dinner attack and gun industry groups applaud the changes.
