DOJ Adds Eight Major Grocers to Beef Pricing Investigation

The department is seeking multi-year purchasing, pricing and margin records to map how wholesale supply and retailer practices shape what consumers pay.

Overview

  • The Justice Department publicly expanded the criminal beef-affordability probe on Sept. 2 by sending letters to Kroger, Publix, Walmart, Albertsons, Aldi, Ahold Delhaize USA, Costco and Amazon requesting detailed data.
  • The retail requests extend a probe that began in May into the four largest meatpackers — Tyson, JBS, Cargill and National Beef — which the DOJ says account for roughly 80–85% of U.S. beef processing.
  • Federal investigators have reviewed millions of documents, interviewed industry participants and offered whistleblower rewards as they press for six years of records to trace price transmission from processors to store shelves.
  • President Trump has authorized a temporary tariff pause to allow up to 300,000 metric tons of lean beef into the U.S. market on a 90-day schedule and USDA officials are rolling out programs to support ranchers.
  • Ranchers and many Republican lawmakers have sharply criticized the import move as a short-term fix that could depress cattle prices while the U.S. herd remains at multi-decade lows and will take years to rebuild, and no retailers have been accused of wrongdoing at this stage.
