Doctor Tells Court He Thought Parnell Square Girl Was Dead

Medical evidence described emergency transfusions that departed from standard protocols to try to save the child en route to specialist surgery.

Overview

  • The Central Criminal Court heard that on 23 November 2023 Dr Mike Boyle found a young girl on Parnell Square who appeared grey and had no detectable pulse, and he told jurors he thought she was dead.
  • Dr Boyle said Rotunda staff mobilised universal blood and carried out transfusions in breach of normal protocols because clinicians believed immediate surgery was needed and sought a heart surgeon from the Mater Hospital.
  • Garda Ian Walsh gave evidence that a roughly 36cm kitchen knife was recovered at the scene, preserved in evidence, and shown to the jury during the prosecution case.
  • The accused, 52-year-old Riad Bouchaker of no fixed abode, has pleaded not guilty to eight charges including attempted murder of three children and assault causing serious harm to an adult.
  • The trial before Mr Justice Tony Hunt continues with a 12-member jury as prosecutors and defence lawyers examine CCTV, forensic exhibits and medical testimony that bear on the sequence of events and identification of the attacker.
