DMK MP’s Son Arrested Over Alleged Defamatory YouTube Video

Authorities say the arrest reflects stepped-up enforcement of laws against obscene online content with the accused due to be produced before a Saidapet magistrate

Overview

  • A complaint by BJP functionary Alisha Abdullah, which she lodged on Wednesday, alleges a video on the YouTube channel MY INDIA 24x7 contained obscene and sexually explicit remarks about her and her newborn twins.
  • The Cyber Crime Branch arrested 33-year-old Tiruchi Surya on Thursday during its probe into the upload and said he will be produced before the Metropolitan Magistrate Court at Saidapet.
  • Police registered a case at the CCB Cyber Crime Police Station and the Social Media Investigation Wing is examining the video and identifying other participants and uploaders named in the complaint.
  • Chennai Police Commissioner A. Amalraj warned that publishing obscene or derogatory material targeting women online is a punishable offence, and the complainant publicly thanked state leaders and police for swift action.
  • As investigators move forward, the case is drawing attention because Surya is the son of DMK Rajya Sabha MP Tiruchi Siva and has a prior record of party disciplinary action including expulsion from the BJP in 2024.
