Disney to Rework Carousel of Progress, Closing Current Show July 6 for 2027 Relaunch

Imagineering will move each act forward about 60 years, replace every scene and animatronic, and add a life‑sized Walt figure to make the show feel current to today’s guests.

Overview

  • Disney announced the overhaul on Thursday, May 28 and said the current version of Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress will close after July 5 with construction beginning July 6, 2026 and a planned reopening in 2027.
  • The attraction’s four acts will be reset about 60 years later so scenes will be set in summer 1969, Halloween 1985, New Year’s Eve 1999, and a distant, retro‑futuristic finale that may be off‑planet.
  • A new introductory scene will feature a life‑sized Walt Disney Audio‑Animatronic inspired by the 1964 ‘Disneyland Goes to the World’s Fair’ special while the family characters and the Sherman Brothers’ song will be retained.
