Disney Invests $1 Billion in OpenAI to License 200+ Characters for Sora

The companies cast the three-year arrangement as a guarded path to monetize fan-made AI videos without using real performers.

Overview

  • Disney takes a $1 billion equity stake with warrants as part of a three-year deal that licenses more than 200 characters from Disney, Marvel, Pixar and Star Wars to OpenAI’s Sora platform starting in early 2026.
  • Only animated, masked or creature characters are included and real human actors are excluded, with Sora clips limited to 30 seconds.
  • Both sides tout guardrails and paid-use controls for Sora, while details on enforcement and protections for creators are still being developed.
  • Disney will become a major OpenAI client, providing employees access to ChatGPT and using OpenAI models to build new products, tools and experiences.
  • Select Sora-made videos may appear on Disney+ under a one-year exclusivity clause, as Disney also sent Google a legal demand over alleged unauthorized use of its content in AI systems.
