Disney+ Greenlights Its First Canadian Original Series

The streamer has commissioned a comedy and a three-part true-crime docuseries as a first step toward larger local investment that could shape federal policy on foreign streamers.

Overview

  • Disney+ announced on Thursday, June 11, 2026 that it has greenlit two Canadian originals: an eight-episode comedy titled Knighted and a three-part true-crime docuseries titled I’m Not Coming Back.
  • Knighted is produced by Heavy Lifting Productions in association with 3 Arts Entertainment, was developed by Jackson Rowe and Mike Mildon, and is executive produced by Bruce McCulloch; the series follows an absurd, documentary-style investigation into a missing person at a medieval dinner theatre.
  • I’m Not Coming Back comes from Tuck Shop Media and Hodgee Films, is produced by Joe Tuck and directed by Brent Hodge, and examines a 2019 manhunt in Manitoba that involved assistance from a member of the Fox Lake Cree Nation.
  • Disney+ says the orders show a commitment to Canadian talent, and the company tapped former CBC executive Paige Murray in December 2025 to lead its Canada strategy, but neither series has announced production start dates or premiere windows.
  • The announcement arrives during a high-profile federal debate over raising foreign streamers’ required spending on Canadian content and follows years of other global platforms like Netflix and Amazon investing in locally produced Canadian originals.
