DGT Launches Weeklong Alcohol and Drug Road Checks Across Galicia

Authorities say intensified checks focus on tourist hotspots, nightlife areas, plus conventional roads to reduce a factor linked to about 30% of fatal crashes.

Overview

  • The DGT, together with the Guardia Civil and local police, launched the special campaign Monday and will run intensified roadside alcohol and drug tests through July 19 across all road types in Galicia.
  • Officials singled out tourist areas, nightlife 'tardeo' periods and conventional roads as priority locations and asked town councils and municipal police to reinforce checks in urban leisure zones.
  • Authorities reiterated the 0.0 g/l message, warned that positive tests carry administrative sanctions and said drivers may face criminal charges if impairment affects their ability to drive.
  • The operation repeats tactics used in July 2025 when authorities ran 31,139 tests and recorded 928 positives, with very high drug‑test rates reported in A Coruña and Pontevedra used as the rationale for targeted enforcement.
  • Police will publish this week’s results after the campaign ends and officials say the effort is meant to augment year‑round controls and discourage impaired driving during a high‑traffic summer week.
