DGCA Tightens Oversight of IndiGo as CEO Recalled, Disruptions Continue

Regulators are stationing inspectors at the airline to probe rostering failures linked to new pilot rest rules.

Overview

  • IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers appeared before the DGCA on Thursday and was asked to return on Friday with detailed operational data and recovery plans.
  • The regulator has installed an eight-member oversight team at IndiGo’s Gurgaon headquarters and expanded on-site inspections at multiple airports to track cancellations, refunds, baggage handling and crew utilisation.
  • IndiGo announced ₹10,000 travel vouchers for passengers severely affected on December 3–5, in addition to refunds and government‑mandated compensation.
  • Cancellations persisted on Thursday with over 100 flights cut by early afternoon, including 60 at Bengaluru and 36 at Chennai, after about 220 were scrapped on Wednesday at major hubs.
  • The government has reduced IndiGo’s winter schedule by 10% and imposed temporary fare caps as the civil aviation minister blamed gross mismanagement and faulty crew rostering for the meltdown.
