‘Devil Wears Prada 2’ Press Tour Reaches Shanghai as Anne Hathaway Tears Up

A fashion-first campaign doubles as a platform for Meryl Streep to spotlight on-screen roles for older women.

Overview

  • Anne Hathaway grew emotional at a large fan event during Friday’s Shanghai stop, telling the crowd she was “overwhelmed” by the turnout.
  • Red-carpet looks in Shanghai doubled as knowing callbacks to the 2006 film, with Hathaway in a ruffled Susan Fang dress and clear slingbacks and Streep in a deep-blue Saint Laurent look that nodded to the famous “cerulean” speech.
  • Meryl Streep, speaking at a Japan press conference earlier this week, said she is happy to represent older women in a major role and noted that women over 50 often see their views devalued.
  • The final trailer, released April 6, shows Andy returning to Runway to help during a scandal, with the sequel reuniting director David Frankel and writer Aline Brosh McKenna and adding new cast members including Kenneth Branagh, Simone Ashley, Justin Theroux and Lucy Liu.
  • The film opens May 1 from 20th Century and Disney to launch the summer box office after a global tour through Mexico City, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai that has blended fan moments with viral fashion clips.
