Overview
- Security engineer Andy Nguyen published ps5-linux on GitHub, offering a documented way to start a full Linux desktop on compatible PlayStation 5 units.
- The approach only works on disc-based consoles running firmware 3.xx–4.xx because it relies on a hypervisor flaw that newer 5.xx updates already block.
- Booting Linux requires first triggering the separate umtx2 exploit to gain code execution, after which Nguyen’s payload loads the Linux environment.
- The release builds a bootable Ubuntu 24.04 image and includes M.2 installation tools plus fan and CPU/GPU boost controls that users must pair with a higher fan profile.
- Nguyen’s demos show PC games like GTA V and Spider-Man running at up to 4K at 60 Hz, though some monitors balk at higher resolutions and 120 Hz is not supported yet.
