Detroit Worker Fatally Stabbed Near Chipotle

Police used downtown surveillance to locate a suspect about 20 minutes after the attack, showing rapid coordination between public officers and private security.

Overview

  • A 34-year-old Chipotle employee, identified by family as Jaquoya Wix, was stabbed in an alley near Woodward Avenue and E. Congress while on a break and later died at Receiving Hospital after collapsing outside a nearby business.
  • Downtown workers chased the attacker and officers tracked and arrested a man in his 40s about 20 minutes after the assault at Woodward and State Street using cameras and related technology.
  • Investigators say there appeared to be little or no interaction between Wix and the suspect before the attack, the suspect did not have the knife when arrested, and police believe the weapon has been recovered and is being processed.
  • Mayor Mary Sheffield described the attack as unprovoked and raised severe mental-health concerns, and Chipotle issued condolences and said it is cooperating fully with law enforcement.
  • Wix’s family has launched a GoFundMe and scheduled a candlelight vigil, and police continue interviews and evidence processing with no formal charges or arraignment timing announced yet.
