Detroit City FC Breaks Ground on 15,000-Seat AlumniFi Field

The project will spur local investment, add housing, create jobs, honor the former Southwest Detroit Hospital, target a spring 2028 opening.

Overview

  • A ceremonial groundbreaking was held Wednesday, July 15, 2026, at the Michigan Avenue and 20th Street site of the long-closed Southwest Detroit Hospital to formally start work on the privately funded stadium.
  • Barton Malow is serving as construction manager and the plan calls for a natural grass pitch, three covered grandstands, a 421-space parking garage and mixed-use development that includes apartments.
  • The club pushed the opening from spring 2027 to spring 2028 because of construction realities, and Detroit City FC will play the 2027 season at Keyworth Stadium in Hamtramck.
  • DCFC disclosed a largest-ever, undisclosed investment from Jay Farner and says the wider project, reported at about $198 million, could generate roughly $25 million in annual economic impact.
  • The club has a $2 million community benefits agreement, will include a commemorative installation for the former hospital, and has collected more than 6,000 season-ticket deposits while operating a preview center at the Mercado.
