Detroit Chief Seeks Suspension of Officer After Traffic-Stop Shooting That Wounded Driver

The case has moved to a state-led investigation with a warrant request now before county prosecutors.

Overview

  • The driver was shot six times and is expected to survive, and she will not face charges, according to Chief Todd Bettison.
  • After reviewing body-camera footage, Bettison said preliminary accounts were incorrect and that the driver had provided her license and registration.
  • Bettison cited four policy violations: pursuing for a traffic offense, boxing in the SUV, firing at a moving vehicle absent an extreme threat, and failing to summon a supervisor when requested.
  • He requested the shooting officer be suspended without pay, while Michigan State Police oversee the probe and a warrant request has been submitted to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.
  • The officer has about one year and nine months on the force with no pending discipline, and the Police Board is expected to consider the suspension request on Nov. 6.
