Detonators and Bones Found at Vacant Farm in Brandenburg

Controlled detonation removed the explosive threat with forensic tests under way to determine whether the bones are human.

Overview

  • Workers cleaning a vacant farm in Brandenburg an der Havel discovered suspicious objects in a shed and a skull bone plus other bones in another room during cleanup on Saturday.
  • Specialists from the state criminal investigation office concluded the items were outdated detonators containing less than 100 grams of explosive and bomb-disposal teams transported them in a special container to a nearby field for a controlled detonation.
  • The bones were collected by an undertaker and have been transferred to the institute of forensic medicine for examination to establish whether they are human.
  • Police have opened a Todesermittlungsverfahren to investigate the origin of the remains and separate proceedings under the explosives law over the detonators, with local police, the Kriminalpolizei and the Landeskriminalamt involved.
  • If forensic tests confirm human remains, investigators are likely to expand the death inquiry into a criminal investigation and may carry out further searches and forensic work at the property.
